Hummingbirds: The tiny, mighty and amazing things they do

Superpowers Hummingbirds see well. They can see UV color better than humans.  

Their hearts beat 1,200 bpm. The average body temperature is over 100 degrees.  

While migrating, they sleep and enter torpor, a sleep-like state with decreased metabolism.  

Populations “Most people are okay. Clark: Most but not all. The Calliope Hummingbirds used to breed in the San Gabriels and San Jacintos, but they have disappeared and practically disappeared from the San Bernardinos in recent decades.  

Fine feeders Red plastic feeders with sugar water attract birds. Clean feeders periodically to keep ants, bees, and other pests out.  

Nesting Hummingbird nests are half-dollar-wide and lay jelly bean-sized eggs. Thistle or dandelion down, spider silk, and pine sap form nests. Mothers can have four clutches a year and two eggs at once. Men are territorial and fight to the death.  

Flight unlike any other Hummingbirds are the only birds that hover. It may flap its wings around 50 times a second, depending on species. It and Han species can fly backwards and sideways.
