An Overripe Banana Is The Secret To Attracting More Hummingbirds To Your Yard

Hummingbirds are drawn to fruit, and they eat 2,000 insects a day to keep their metabolism going. Banana peels next to feeders attract fruit flies and other insects that hummingbirds need to eat.

Yeast is fed by sugar and other organic compounds produced during the breakdown of banana peels. Fruit flies are drawn to your plants by the aromatic fumes released during this process.

Because they consume invasive fruit flies, hummingbirds may help control their population. According to a Cornell University study, hummingbirds prey on the spotted-wing drosophila, an invasive fruit fly that decimates berry crops.

Including fruit in your garden, such as bananas and banana peels, draws hummingbirds and insects.

It's simple to feed overripe bananas to hummingbirds. Bananas should be placed in your garden next to feeders or other feeding areas. If you are giving the entire banana, chop or mash it.

The banana can be placed in a Humm-Yumm banana feeder or on a little plate or tray. On Amazon, Humm-Yumm Hanging Hummingbird Feeders are about $28. Both protein and nectar are in this feeder.

This hummingbird feeder contains eight ounces of nectar and slices of banana. All the nectar and nutrition that hummingbirds require comes from fruit flies that attract bananas.

In cooler months, clean your feeder once a week; in warmer months, do it every few days. Then, add fresh nectar. Making your own hummingbird nectar at home should only involve sugar and water, thus using a recipe is advised.

This keeps harmful honey, brown sugar, and food coloring away from hummingbirds. It is only necessary to replace bananas and banana peels every three weeks. If you plant overripe bananas in your garden, hummingbirds could come by.
